The cards above are part of a photo album that Midshipman Van Burien Edwards of the USS Connecticut brought back from the cruise.  This group show the different people of Tangier.

As a schedule change, the Secretary of State directed Admiral Sperry to send a flag officer, with no less than two ships to call an Tangier.  This was the result of the United States' decision to recognize Mulai Hafid as the Sultan of Morocco.  Rear Admiral Wainwright was assigned this duty and consequently sailed from Marseilles with the Georgia and Nebraska on 27 January.  The arrived off Tangier on 30 January and fired a twenty-one-gun salute to Morocco, officially recognizing the administration of Mulai Hafid.  After exchanging salutes with a couple of French cruisers and a Spanish gunboat, the battleships came to anchor and Wainwright and the two captains conducted official calls.  This group of ships is shown in the photo above.

The Tangier visit was just a short stopover and only twenty-five enlisted men per ship were granted liberty on January 31st.  This has made the items associated with this visit quite scarce.  The postcard at right was written on January 31st and indicates that "without regrets" he will be ready to move on to Gibralta.  The card is canceled aboard the USS Georgia on February 1, 1909.
