Cairo
- An Adventure in Egypt
|
Sending 1600 sailors ashore,
for two days, to transit between cities without officers
is something that today's navy would certainly think
twice. To my knowledge there were no incidents
of dicipline problems during this part of the journey.
The above card is part
of a set of cards created by Brown and Schaffer.

collection is found at this

This
is a set of cards that was over-printed with information
regarding the fleet's visit to Cairo.

|
In Cairo sailors
quickly adopted the wearing of the bright red fez and
traded for them freely with their white caps. They
were then seen parading through the streets on donkeys
and camels with the new headgear.

These cards are created from
a photographer that was onboard the USS Wisconsin and are part of
the M.
R. Battey Collection. This group shows scenes from around
Cairo and the Nile.

This
card was mailed in Cairo on January 4th, 1909 from R.
Walsh, USS Ohio, one of the sailors who made the 8-mile
