 Passing the Columbia River

The fleet departed San Francisco on the morning of May 18th passing the Columbia River on the 20th.

The fleet was met by the Excursion Boats Alliance, Tatoosh, and the Roanoak on May 20th, Battleship Day.  For Portland citizens, the opportunity to see the fleet pass was worth paying to ride pleasure boats to the Mouth of the Columbia as they passed.

The fleet encountered very stormy weather off the coast of Oregon as it made its way to Puget Sound.  The hydrographic bureau on the Farrallone Islands had sent out warnings by wireless to all the vessels, and the heavy winds out of the North made their progress very slow.
