Valletta,
Malta
January 14th - 19th, 1909

At Left: The
invation to the Grand Naval and Military Night, Mediterranean
Fleet Boxing Association event given while the Fleet
was in Malta.
Boxing events
were given throughout the cruise. They typically
matched sailors from each ship that were the best in
weight class against sailors from the ships that were
in port at the same time.
|
Three ships visited the British naval base at Malta, the Kearsarge,
Illinois, and the Wisconsin from January 14th till the 19th.
The photos above show the Wisconsin and Kearsarge which
arrived in the harbor on the 14th while the Illinois arrived on
the 17th. These photos are part of the M.
R. Battey Collection.

This
crew photograph was taken on the USS Virginia while
In Valletta, Malta. Crewmembers often posed for
professional photographers and then each made a purchase
of the card, depending on the quality.

For
a sailor, this might have been one of the most interesting
places to visit during the cruise, the Chapel of Bones.
The two cards on the right and left are from the
M. R. Battey collection while the card in the center
was mailed home by William
Burgess and can be seen in that collection.

These
two postcards were purchased by E.
V. Hubbard attached to the USS Wisconsin and represent
the only two commercial cards that I have found from
the fleet's visit.
