The trip through the Suez Canal provided many sites and scenes for a young sailor in the American Navy. His cards show scenes of life in Cairo, monuments, and the people. The card showing the canal from the south is one that was mailed and used by other sailors and shown at other locations on this site. The postcard at right shows a native dress from one of the many unique cultures of their trip to Egypt. |

The USS Connecticut visited Italy To support the relief efforts for the earthquake that occur in Messina, the USS Connecticut visited Naples from January 11th to 20th, 1909. This was a golden opportunity for Van, for it appears that he got ashore and saw the sites. The below collections of cards of the city are probably an indication that Van spent many hours just walking the streets, seeing the sites. |
