 Photographs from Ceylon

The visit to Ceylon was another port where the people and culture were new to sailors of the fleet and they enjoyed seeing the city, meeting the people, and visiting the sites.

RIGHT:  A card mailed by Will showing the Sacred Elephants of the Kandy Temple getting a bath.  He comments:  Well how would you like to have one of these fellows Howard?  I bet you would have some fun then."

BELOW:  Cards showing native fishing boats, natives boutiques, native children and street scene.

Transiting the Suez Canal

William Burgess was not one of the crewmembers who elected, or was selected to visit Cairo and the pyramids.  This card, dated January 5, 1909 was mailed a day before the ship transited the canal.  It was probably purchased in Suez and mailed in the city before departure.

It is interesting that the card does not contain a ship's cancel.  Some units of the fleet did received their cancels for use in their shipboard post office upon arriving in Suez.  I have not found a card from the USS Kearsarge showing one of these cancels from anywhere on the cruise.

Malta

The fleet's stop at Malta was extremely limited with only three ships making a port visit, Kearsarge, Wisconsin, and Illinois.  These cards show the culture of the country.  The card at the left is from the Chapel of Bones; the card in the middle and Egg Seller image that is nicely used with local postage usage while in port; and the card on the right showing a the Mahometan Cemetry.

Algers, Algeria

These cards are all nice images from the city of Algers.  Of the group, only one of the cards was mailed using postage.  The remaining cards appareently were sent inside envelopes with letters.  Will writes, "Dear Nephew.  Well Howard this is the last postal I guess of our trip for we will be home in less than a month.  Uncle Will"

Gibraltar

The fleet by this time was ready to go home. The visit in Gibraltar included some site seeing and getting the ship ready for the trans-Alantic crossing.  Will writes, "May be out to see you soon but am not sure yet.  Uncle Will"
