Sailors and Marines at the Redwood Forest

The photo album of E. L. DeMoss is truly a unique set of historical photos.  They document the life of a sailor during the cruise of the Great White Fleet in a way that postcards and newspaper accounts simply cannot.  The photos were taken most likely by one of the crewmembers who then made reprints and sold them amongst the crew.  The collection I found went beyond documenting the events of the cruise and extended to shipboard life, shipmates, shipboard acitivites and the events of the ship after the return from the cruise.  One set of cards documents the USS Kansas getting her mast change at Philidelphia Naval Shipyard.

The mascots aboard the Kansas were plentiful.  Dogs, cats, kangaroos, and the "Cuban Recruit".  All with names and well treated.  By the photographs, they were certainly a part of the crew that could not be left ashore.

Events from the Kansas visiting California

Oakland-BBQ 1.jpg

After the fleet paraded through downtown Oakland, the city treated the fleet to a BBQ feast!

The fleet arrived in San Francisco to great fanfare.  It was the largest assembly of U.S. warships ever assembled and was reviewed by the Secretary of the Navy,Metcalf.  The below photos were taken as the ships went to anchorage.  On the left, Kansas and Connecticut enter Golden Gate; Center: Connecticut fires salute; Right: Secretary Metcalf reviewing fleet, San Francisco.

These two photographs show the dry dock at Hunter's Point. The Kansas might have gotten her fire control system upgraded during this drydocking.

Visiting the Northwest

"Free Lunch & Refreshments for sailor men and Ladies .. . Here" The city of Bellingham's reception to the fleet.  A great photograph documenting the enthusiasm of the Bellingham's community towards the Fleet's visit.

Mascots of the USS Kansas

Nothing as important as the mascots of the ship.  The Kansas seemed to be full of them.
