Illuminations of the Fleet

Illuminations
The use
of electricity was still a modern marvel in 1908. Ships
of the fleet, with their huge generators were capable
of stringing lights to outline the ships hull and super
structure each night.
For a
ships they would use search lights, used for finding
other ships (not planes) at night. Criss-crossing
the sky in random fashion they provided a grand show
for viewers ashore.
This type
of event was a part of many of the port visits of the
fleet.
