Sailors
and Marines at the Sphinx
|
Cairo
and the Pyramids
The fleet
arrived at the entrance to the Suez Canal and allowed
sailors from each ship to make an overland trip, by
train, to Cairo and the Pyramids.
The photographs
of DeMoss do not indicate if he was able to join this
group. Given that fewer than 10% of the crews
were able to participate, maybe not. He was able
to put together a group of cards that he saved by purchasing
these cards from the onboard photographer.
|
The
above phtographs show the trip to the pyramids. Sailors
posed on camels and, with the assistance of guides climbed
on the pyramids. The last photo shows the tombs
under the Sphinx.

|
This
group of cards show views from the city of Cairo including
a center photo at a city Temple.

Events

Kansas
was one of the ships that visited Villefrance. The
first group of photographs are from the harbor areas.
These photographs are some of the only photographs
that I have found.

scene of the city, and the last showing the harbor.

The
two photographs to the left shows scene from Monaco,
along the coast, and the casle in the city.
Above
is a photograph of Monte Carlo. Sailors were able
to travel along the coast during their port visit.

"DeMoss had
photographs showing the scenes of Gibraltar from the
ship. Many of the sailors stayed onboard the ships,
to work, or because they were ready to return to the
'States'.
At right is a
view of the harbor at Gibraltar from beyond the breakwater.
