California welcomes the Atlantic Fleet

The arrival of the Atlantic Fleet on the west coast was an occasion to celebrate.  Theodore Roosevelt needed to show that are fleet was able to respond to both coast of the country to comfort the citizens of California worried about the perceived threat from Japan.

For sailors of the fleet, visiting San Francisco included sites from the earthquake of 1906.  Much of the city had been damaged during the quake and in 1908 many of the ruins were still visible.  At left Richard poses with shipmates on the steps of City Hall in San Francisco.  As can be seen the damage was extensive.

 At right is a photograph of the terminal building with lights for the celebration of the Fleet in San Francisco.  The Fleet parade passed along this route.

At right: Richard gets his photograph taken with an unknown couple in front of General Fremont in Santa Cruz.  Note the picture of Admiral Evans and the American flags posted on the tree for the Fleet's visit.

At left: Richard visits an ostrich farm while in California.

These types of farms were popular for getting feathers for women's hats.

Above a set of photographs taken by Richard of the parade in San Francisco. These images were all taken from the same vantage point along Van Ness and show the parade reversing and going back the same direction in some of the photographs.
