Richard Wesley Konter, USS New Jersey

The ships arrive in Honolulu

The photographs of Richard where stored in an album for more than 60 years before he decided they needed to be removed.  Now over 90 years old, he picked up scissors and started cutting the photo album up.

Hawaii-to-Auckland_Bill_Taf.jpg

This postcard was most likely created on the ship and shows the USS New Jersey heading toward Auckland.  At right in the card is "Bill Taft" the ships mascot drinking a bottle of milk.

Alongside the New Jersey the crew received the Intrepid, a harbor tug the brought the fruits of the islands.

Fruit-Boat-Alongside.jpg

This group of photographs show the fruit barge and tug alongside ships to transfer the fruit barge.

Fresh fruit was very popular with the crews of the ships and they can be seen lining the rails at right to view the unloading or the barge.  On the deck of the Intrepid can be seen a group of men playing ukeles under the decorations of palms.

Georgia-Honolulu.jpg

At left is a nice photograph of the USS Georgia sitting alongside the pier in Honolulu.  The photo shows the ship and the pier with a lot of activity with both sailors and workers.  Sailors are on all level of the super structure possibly preparing to get the ship underway.
