Richard Wesley Konter, USS New Jersey

The visit to Manila and Yokohama

The photographs of Richard captured unique events of the cruise that were not documented by others.  An example, the parade of boats in Manila and the "welcome" boat in Yokohama.

This group of photographs from Richard are all from the ship, a possible indication that he did not get an opportunity to go ashore during this port visit.

The fleet arrived in Manila Bay and anchored.  The community sent out a fleet of small craft and created a Parade of Boats that ciricle the ships while anchored.  Below, the craft Sumiwat and an Irish Man-o-War as part of the parading boats.

When Richard was ashore, it was clear he knew how to see the sites and have a good time.  Many of the photographs he had taken included him with his shipmates having fun.

At right he joins a shipmate in dressing up in Japanese traditional clothing for the camera.

Below, Richard poses in a rickshaw outside the Hibyia Park where there were demonstrations of Japanese culture and various stages in the park.

At right Richard poses with a group that looks like a family outside of their house.  A second photo exists with Richard holding a small child.

At left is a nice photograph of a small footbridge that was probably located in the community around the fleet landing in Yokohama.  Richard's was taken by the way people lived in small villages and by the decorations that were placed on houses and business for their visit.

The photogaph at right shows a ship decorated with lights to "WELCOME" the American Fleet.  There is nothing is the photograph to identify the location, however it was numbered by Richard to be included in the group that were from Yokohama.  The City did have a ship to welcome the fleet, but I am not sure if it had lights.
