Richard Wesley Konter, USS New Jersey

The Sites of South America

Richard arrived in Trinidad and got busy with his camera for the time he had ashore.  From the photographs it appears that he was only ashore for one day but had a chance to take in many of the sites.

As he went ashore his photographs are from street scenes and attractions of the city.  A photograph in the park relaxing under a palm tree.

At left a group of sailors gather on a street corner in front of a street cafe.  Much of his day was probably spent walking down streets and identifying things that re different and the same with their hometown and American culture.

Popular sites in any city are to visit the important pieces of architecture, typically including the churches and cathedrals.  As with many of the photographs of

this collection, the photographs of this Byzantine type cathedral at left and right is unidentified.

At right is a photograph of the fleet anchored in the Port of Spain, Trinidad.  This is the only photograph that I have found showing the fleet in Trinidad and shows liberty boats transiting to the ships.

Rio de Janeiro

Richard enjoyed Rio by seeing the city as a tourist.  At left he poses with people on the street.  Below he joins a tour car at the Information Bureau for American Seaman.

One of the sites Richard found was the Jardim Botanical Gardens located within the city.   His photographs show the colonnade of palm trees and the fountain located at the end.  The images at right can still be seen at the gardens today 100 years later.

Punta Arenas, Chile

There is only one photograph that can be identified as being from Chile, this image of a Chilean Navy ship alongside one of the fleet ships in Punta Arenas.  This ship remains unidentified.

Callao, Peru

Richard got a chance to take in the sites of Callao and to visit Lima and the bull fights.  The photographs at right show a old church that was located either in Callao or Lima.  So far I have not been able to identify the church form these photographs.

donkey-cart-Peru.jpg

Imagine his surprise to find this horse cart used to transport his shipmates around town.  One of the really nice things about this collection is the fact that Richard took pictures of things, as a sailor, he found interesting.  His interests where things and places that were not recorded by the many professional photographers accompanying the fleet.

The photograph at right shows two sailors, one from the Vermont, (in different uniforms) with "indian" children up in the Andes Mountains.  This photograph was taken at one of the train stops between Callao and Lima.

At Left:  Photograph of a Chinese community in either Lima or Callao.  This location is unidentified.

Lima-Bullfight-RWK.jpg

The biggest event for the fleet visit to Peru was the bullfight. Richard was able to photograph a close-up of the action at left.  Below are two photographs of the slide that blocked the train on the way back from Lima.

Richard and his shipmates road on top of the train enabling him to capture this photograph of them passing through a bridge.  At right he poses near the slide that stopped the train overnight at high altitude and caused a great deal of concern.
