Correspondence from the Fleet Visit

card above shows the intersection of market and post street
with a foldout containing the sixteen battleships of
the Great White Fleet. Below are two more cards
that were modified in this manner for the Fleet's visit.
The above card was canceled in May 1908 in San Francisco.

With two sailors
holding up the world, this card has an embroidered battleship
and the map of the Americas. The verse below reads,
"From the Atlantic to the Pacific our ships they
sailed away, Homage to your foreign neighbors and honors
to pay"

This is a studio
photo postcard of a sailor from the Fleet. In
1908 it was still a pretty big deal to be sitting behind
the wheel of an automobile. The sign in the background
reads "23 miles to SF" Postmarked May
1908

The Hibernia Savings
and Loan of San Francisco. The card depicts the
bank decorated for the fleet visit and states across
the bottom, "Fleet Souvenir May 6, 1908"

over 300 cards from most of the port visits of the cruise.
