Events of the Fleet's Visit to San Francisco

The Great Naval Parade in San Francisco on May 8th (the H. H. Stratton series)

The parade in downtown San Francisco was one of the biggest events since the end of the Civil War. Over 8,000 blue jackets participated in an event involving over 14,000 marchers including the Marines and Army. The parade proceded up Market Street from the Ferry Building to Van Ness Avenue, over to Washington Street, and down Washington Street to return to the Ferry Building. Over 500,000 people observed the parade.

One of the San Franciso photographers that was there to photograph the fleet was Patton. These five cards showing the blue jackets marching and Admiral Evans coach.

These three photos are part of a rare photo album assembled for the Governor of Nebraska and his party that visited the USS Nebraska at San Francisco to deliver the wardroom silver setting. The entire album can be viewed at this link.

Oakland BBQ

While inport at San Francisco the City of Oakland had a parade similar to San Francisco. A program of events is below. After the parade was a BBQ for the sailors of the Fleet. The card to the left was published by the Pillsbury Picture Compay.

These cards are from the M. R. Battey Collection. The collection contains over 300 cards from most of the port visits of the cruise.
