The Fleet regrouped on the 23rd at 2:30 pm
to transit to Elliott Bay. The Connecticut
was followed by the Kansas, Minnesota, Vermont,
Georgia, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Louisiana, Virginia,
Ohio, Illinois, and Kearsarge.
The parade on the 26th of May was
attended by as many as 400,000 people of the Northwest.
It was the largest event in Seattle history.
A unique feature of the parade was the presentation
of bears as mascots for the 16 battleships.
Seattle was a great visit for postcards. I
have had some luck in finding various "ship"
postcards that were canceled during the fleet's
visit, no doubt to the large number of people who
visited the ships while in the harbor.
Seattle
was excited and prepared for the fleet visit. These
two postcards show the the tour boats in the harbor
taking people out the the ships in Elliot Bay.
These
three cards show some of the sites during the fleet
visit. At left fireworks from barges and illuminated
ships in the harbor. Center: Staged native
Americans for viewing by tourists. Right: Street
scene welcoming the fleet.

special menu for the fleet visit at the Rathskeller
Men's Grill showing a picture of the USS Washington.

This is the official

by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. It includes
the schedule of events, information about the fleet
and Seattle adertisers.
At left: A
card made by the Lilly Company of Seattle showing the
fleet in the background. It has an interesting invitation
to visit during the fleet vist and dated May 18, 1908.
At right: Sometimes a card
comes along to let you know you are collecting the right
thing! This card, canceled in Seattle, Washington
(my home), with a picture of the Nebraska (my favorite
ship), is addressed to: W. F. Stewart (My
name being William F. Stewart) What are the odds?
Left: A
comemorative coin honoring the fleet's visit to Seattle.

a nice view of Mount Rainier. It is mailed from
a sailor on the USS Connecticut on May 27, 1908 to Miss
Beulah Will of Turkey, Pennsylvania. The card
and a "wireless USS Connecticut" stamp on
the back in the upper left corner.
