The Photo
Postcards
of M. R. Battey, USS Missouri
|
The cards within this
collection are a collection of photo postcards collected
by M. R. Battey duriing his world cruise. They
are assembled as the work of a single artist or artists
who photographed throughout the cruise. Initially
I thought these cards were part of the photographs of
Brown and Schaffer. With further examination there
are some basic differences that make it difficult for
these to be the work of Brown & Schaffer. The
initial and most obvious difference is the hand writing
on the cards. B & S cards have distinct white
lettering in the photo while this collection is
written in black pen on the negataive below the photo
image. Additionally, B & S were on the USS
Georgia and did not have the opportunity to visit the
ports of Greece, Malta, and Algeria.
Unfortunately,
I don't know who the photographer of this collection.
The only clue to the photographer might be
that he must have been on the the Wisconsin or Kearsarge.
These were the only two ships in Malta at the
time of the phtographs in this collection. for
now I can only call them the Photo Postcards of M. R.
Battey.

The
Bullfight at Lima Peru
This
set of cards presents a contradiction to the thought
that this is a separate photographer. These cards
are include in the Brown & Schaffer collection and
are selected for publishing by H. H. Stratton. Some
have the white lettering, some the black writing below
the pictures.

Mascots
This
pair of cards shows the cub bears that were given to
each ship while visiting Seattle.
The
mascots on each ship became a zoo with parrots, kangaroos,
cats, dogs, and bears

Coaling
a Battleship
What
a great shot of navy life on a battleship. It
truly separates this photographer from someone taking
snapshots and someone capturing the spirit and life
of a sailor.
