Photographs
from Ceylon
|
The
photographs taken by Gerald reflect his interest in
the cultures he was visiting. His pictures were
rarely of major landmarks or historic sites, but rather
of the lifestyle and people he observed while visiting
a port. This photograph of the thatch covered
wagons of Colombo.

These
photographs were made during his trip to Kandy, Ceylon.
The government provided rail transportation for
the fleet to visit the city of Kandy for recreation.
At left, children, at right the train station.

Visiting
the Pyramids
This
group of cards is from the fleet's overland trip to the pyramids.
Apparently Gerald got lucky and was able to accompany the
enlisted men to the pyramids while the ship transited the Canal.
The two pictures to the right appear to be Gerald in
civilian cloths.

Hampton
Roads
These
two pictures are from the fleet's return to Virginia.
On the left is the Chamberlain Hotel and to the
right is the USS New Jersey firing a salute.
