The Postcards
of E. V. Hubbard, USS Wisconsin
|
This collection contains
the postcards that E. V. Hubbard puchased while ashore
during his cruise with the fleet. Most were not
used. In a way this makes sense as the was his
personal collection kept with is possessions onboard
the ship. From several ports there are duplicates
which indicates he was mailing cards to friends and
relatives and wanted to keep one for himself. The
collection starts in the Phillipines. This is
not suprising because the fleet did a wholesale exchange
of sailors from the ships stationed in the Asiatic.
Hubbard most likely joined the cruise from a ship
that was stationed in the Phillipines given the number
of cards that were from outside Manila.

| Cards
from the Philippines
The
cards of this group show the everyday aspects of life
in the Philippines. These cards show that Hubbard
had a chance to travel in the Phillipines while the
average sailor experienced 3 days of rain during the
second port visit and did not find time to get outside
Manila to visit other areas of the country. Recruiting
these sailors to the fleet cruise provided a wealth
of knowledge to ships that had been assembled on the
east coast and lacked experience in the South Pacific.

Yokohama,
Japan
BThe
cards that Hubbard collected while in Japan included
several commeratives and cards that show the cit streets
and architecture. The card in the center of the
group was mailed to Hubbard from a Japanese citizen
the day after meeting him. Another nice card is
in the lower left showing the streetcar decorated for
the American Fleet's visit.

Ceylon
was something new. The elephants,
boats, people, and tropical surroundings
made the visit an adventure. Hubbard's
selection of cards shows his fascination
with all of these aspects. These
cards, when compared to the black &
white photos shown in the "cruise"
portion of this site provide quite a contrast.
