Nell
is watching
The
first card that I have Ben receiving is May 29th after
the ship had gotten underway from Seattle. A nice
patrotic card and an interesting message: "Friend
Ben, Not allowed to write much, Nell is looking. Thanks
you very, very much for all my postals. Dutch-friend,
Floss"

At
this point it is difficult to figure out what is going
on between Ben and Nellie. The months of separation
seem to have taken their toll on Nellie, or possibly
the correspondence between Ben and Floss. Whatever
the reason Ben chooses to send a card with "Cheer
Up" and his personalized "29-0-52"
Seattle,
May 27, 1908

Nellie
Responds
While
in Bremerton Naval Shipyard, Ben receives this card
from Nellie. Apparently she no longer sees a reason
to use "code" to describe here affections
on the front of the card, but dashes off "29
- 0 - 52" on the back of the card.
The
card has a receiving cancel of June 7, 1908

Nellie's response
seemed to generate a flurry of cards from Ben while in the shipyard.
Maybe it was because there really wasn't that much to do in
Bremerton. Four of the cards continue to use the "code"
for special seniments. Three of the cards are from his visit
to Tacoma, one from downtown Bremerton, and the other pair some
more bad statements - STUNG!, Enjoy Yourself . . . . . . . Who
knows what he was trying to say?
