The Postcards
of Geoge Biller and Fannie Light
|
The cards within this
collection are one side of the correspondence between
George Biller of the USS Missouri and Miss Fannie L. Light
of Terre Haute, Indiana believed to be George's Aunt.
The cards in the collection are limited to the
period of the cruise, and it can be assumed to be part
of an estate left by Fannie. Unfortunately, there
are no cards from her, personal photos or additional
history to understand their relationship further. Some
cards are address to Mrs. L. Light, his grandmother,
and some address to Fannie call her Aunt.

South
America Postcards
There
were not many cards from this portion of the cruise
set to Fannie. This group are from various ports
and contain an indication that George used his opportunities
ashore to visit historical and cultural sites.
Because
these group of cards are not posted it is possible that
George mailed many of his cards in letters as a group.
The
cards within this collection did all come from the same
source and without qustions they belonged to the group
of cards posted from George.

California
Cards
The George
was busy and really didn't find much time to send many
cards to Fannie while in California. From the
number of parades and events, there is a good chance
that George didn't get much of a chance to send Fannie,
his Aunt many postals.
It
is unusual that the correspondence in the first card
expresses, "I am writing and longing to hear from
you." This sounds like a little more than
an Aunt to me.

The only

was a private mailing card of Nuuanu Avenue,
Honolulu.

Cards
Mailed from New Zealand
|
|
The
collection contains few commerative cards related to
the cruise. These two cards from New Zealand are
an exception and show sites from the contenient with
the American and New Zealand flags.

The
top card is a souvenir card from the fleets visit depicting
Albert Park in Auckland.
From
the same card publisher is this second card showing
the Owhunga and Manukau Harbor, Auckland's west
coast port.

|
The time in New
Zealand did allow George to mail many cards from his
travels. The two cards on the left are from a
set issued for the fleet's arrival showing the State
of Victoria. The cards on the right are from the
countryside of Whangarei and Home Bay, Motutopu.
