The fleet's depature
from Hampton Roads was a grand celebration of naval
might that was attended by President Roosevelt. They
departed from Hampton
Roads on December 17, 1907, with some
question as to the intent of the fleet when in
arrived in the Pacific. Where we going to war
with Japan? This Harper's Weekly Magazine article
"Fight or Frolic" outlines our nations thoughts.

"Located
on the beautiful waters of Hampton Roads, the Centennial
presents one of the most imposing and picturesque
efects every attained at any exposition. Situated
in the very heart of Colonial America, surrounded
by the most famous historic associations, it naturally
reporesents the noted epochs in the development
of our country. The armies of three wars have
marched over the ground occupied by the Exposition,
so that it is only fitting that this great Ter-Centennial
should assume a military and naval character."

I have
included the departure point of the Great White
Fleet as part of my collection because it was an
event that showed off the assembled fleet to America.
Ships came and went during the months of the
Exposition. Sailors paraded and enjoyed the
Exposition on liberty.
|
My cards
from the Exposition are generally cancel during
the period with one of two special cancels available
at the fair and surrounding communities.
