The Photographs of Karl Lewis

 A Karl Lewis Booklet

for the Fleet in California

Karl Lewis was an American who spent  forty years of his life in Yokohama photographing and publishing picture postcards and cachet covers associated with the American Fleet.  He is widely famous for the thousands of covers that he sold from 1933 to 1941 with full-color cachets hand-painted by Japanese artists.  His early postcards depicted a sailor's life and included cartoons and captions.

These were for sale in Japan or by mail to overseas customers. Most of the cards have a description of the design in English, a three-digit or four-digit number, and an inscription identifying Karl Lewis as the source.

Below are pages of the booklet

Karl Lewis did take photographs of the ships in the harbor.  This collection included these nice photographs of the USS Ohio and the USS Wisconsin at anchor in Yokohama harbor.

These two photographs show the fleet at anchor and the fleet entering Yokohama harbor.

Karl Lewis photographed the Fleet's visit in October 1908, though I have not found any postcards that can be attributed to his photographs while the fleet was in port.  The photograph to the right shows the Welcome arch in Yokohama at the Honcho-Dore.

The photograph to the left shows the Welcome tower in Yokohama at the Bunten-Dore.

At right the Triumphal Arch Hatoba, Yokohama.
