References for the Great White Fleet

MY LIBRARY     This list represents books, pamphlets, and other documents that I have collected regarding the fleet.  Please consider it a reference that you can use.  If you email me with a specific question, I'll take a look and let you know.  Bill@GreatWhiteFleet.info

*****Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet

James R. Reckner

1988

Great history of the Cruise with a unique prospective on the Naval politics regarding new construction.  Highly Recommended, I re-read this book for fact regularly.

Around the World with the Fleet 1907 - 1909

A pictorial Log of the Cruise

United States Naval Institute

1929

This is a log for each port visit with black and white photos of events, buildings and sailors.  Really nice and has been good for comparing with items that I find that are unlabeled.

Men on Board Ships of the Atlantic Fleet

Bound for the Pacific, December 16, 1907

Government Printing Office

1908

This an excellent reference for collectors of fleet correspondence.  The book provides the home address of the sailors of the fleet when they departed from Hampton Roads.  The book is organized by 'state' and allows the reader to check a city to see if a sailor with a certain 'last name' departed for the cruise from that address.

****Theodore Roosevelt and the Great White Fleet

Kenneth Wimmel

1998

A strong discussion on Amercian seapower and the events leading up the Great White Fleet cruise.  A great source of facts.

A Sailor's Log

Robley D. Evans

1908

This is a career history from Robley Evans.  The copy that I have is autographed on the inside front coverby R. D. Evans.

Pictorial Log of the Battle Fleet, Cruise Around the World

Roman J. Miller, Chief Turret Captain USS Vermont

1909

This is really a great book about the cruise.  The cover is sort of deceiving, but the content is great.  More that 100 pages of photos of different port visits without any of the standards shots seen elsewhere.

The Incredible Great White Fleet

Samuel Carter III

1971

As a book of 184 pages, I have found this book to provide the most accurate, inciteful description of the cruise.  It provides an impartial view of the crews for its many aspects while still keeping things interesting.  I have used it as a regular reference for this site.

The American Steel Navy

John D. Alden, CDR (Ret)

1972

An amazing reference describing the transistion from wooden ships to the steel navy in a collection of period photogaraphs that are nothing short of stunning.  Highly, highly recommended if you are a fan of the ships of this period.  Expensive, but well worth it.  I have it on a table where I regularily pick it up and just look though the phots of Hart, Muller and the others.

With the American Fleet from the Atlantic Fleet to the Pacific

Robert D. Jones

1908

As a collector of the Great White Fleet, this is an absolute necessity as a reference.  In this book are the musters of the ships departing Jamestown in December 1907.  It has proven to be an invaluable reference for finding postcards from crewmenbers of the ships.  Hard to find, but worth the search.
