Algeria was visited by the
Kearsarge, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Because of
the earthquake in Italy there was no fanfair, instead
the Fleet visited and paid respects to the local government
as a show of diplomacy. Photos and cards from
this port are scarce. Since the Fleet now had
shipboard post offices making it possible to find cards
canceled while inport Algeria.

This
set of postcards was acquired
by E. V. Hubbard, USS Wisconsin
during his visit to Algiers.
They provide nice views
of what the city looked like
during the summer and help identify
the buildings and views shown
in the real photo postcards.

The
city was still a small harbor city that
provided sailors a view of life different
from what they had seen in other cultures
they had visited during the cruise. The
photographs of this page are from the M.
R. Battey collection. These are
the only photographs that I have found of
the Fleet's visit to Algeria.

The
photographs in this collection show
the daily life and people living in Algeria
in a manner of record we can appreciate
today.

The
photographs in this group nicely document the
architecture, transportation and people of the city.
This
was a unique dance card from a Ball given for the Fleet's
Visit on January 27, 1909. Click image to view larger
